Document Summary
Biological perspective: concerned with the links between biology and behavior. To understand behavior, need to study how social, psychological and biological systems interact and work. Similarities between humans and other animals allow scientists to better understand the nervous system by studying other organisms (same principles apply to all) Neuron: a nerve cell; the basic building block of the nervous system. Multiple sclerosis: when the myelin sheath degenerates; communication to muscles slows with eventual loss of muscle control: terminal branches of axon: form junction with other cells, 100 billion neurons total in humans. 20% in cerebral cortex, 80% in cerebellum. After beginning of adulthood, most neurons do not regenerate. Neurons transmit messages when stimulated by signals from our sense or (unlike other body cells) when triggered by chemical signals from neighboring neurons: neuronal speed of transmission: 3-250km/hour. Reaction time faster in smaller nervous systems.
