Two types of delinquency distinguish btwn those who occasionally break the law in minor ways in teen years and those who commit serious offences (longer term problem) Ineffective monitoring parents of antisocial teens may disengage quickly, don"t recognize teen"s needs for autonomy and greater maturity: family stress and conflict family cohesion is a protective factor. Multisystemic approach has been met with some success. Includes parents training, job training, vocational counseling, development of neighborhood activities and centres: directing energy of deliquents in positive directions. Less arrests and less weeks in out-of-home placements compared to usual juvenile justice. Substance use in adolescence not food substance; substance use increases across high school: most common among adolescence drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana. 3: substance use increases across high school. Instrumental use taking drug to reach a socially acceptable goal i. e losing weight, staying awake, etc.
