Chapter 7 long-term memory: encoding, retrieval, and consolidation. Encoding the process of acquiring information and transferring it into ltm. Encoding is similar to term coding, some authors use these terms interchangeably. Coding has also been used to refer to the form in which information is presented: ex: word can be coded visually or by its sound or by its meaning. Retrieval the process of transferring information from ltm to working memory. Factors that determine whether you can retrieve information from ltm: (1) the way the information was encoded and (2) when you learned it. One way to get info into ltm is through different ways of rehearsal. Maintenance rehearsal rehearse without any consideration of meaning or making connections with other information: this type of rehearsal results in poor memory. Elaborative rehearsal consider meaning and making connections to other information: this type of rehearsal results in better memory than maintenance rehearsal.
