Primary prevention approach to crime: addresses features of out society, culture, and local communities that contribute to our high crime rates. Secondary prevention: aims to identify practices and situations that out certain individuals at risk for illness or injury. Secondary prevention approach to crime: addressed the developmental processes, especially those in early childhood, that make crime even more likely among individuals living in criminogenic social environments. Tertiary prevention: occurs after an illness has begun or an injury has occurred and seeks to minimize the long-term consequences of the health problem. Tertiary prevention approach to crime: focuses on preventing recidivism, or repeat offending, by offenders and on protecting society from these offenders.
