Social control: systematic practices to encourage conformity and discourage deviance stems from socialization (how we grow up and are raised) and negative sanctions (punishments for rule breakers in society) Deviance: any behavior, belief, or condition that violates cultural norms in the society or a group in which it occurs. Ex: tattoos and piercings were almost unknown 30 years ago, today they are a common in society. Crime: an act that violates criminal law and is punishable with fines, jail terms, and other sanctions. People feel strain when they are exposed to cultural goals that they are unable to attain because they do not have access to legitimate means to achieve these goals. Strain theory is used to explain deviance of lower social class. People in lower social class commit crimes because they are unable to attain the social goals of the upper class such as a university degree.
