Document Summary

Fertility: the rate of births in a population or the rate of population increase in general. Mode of reproduction: the predominant pattern, in a culture, of population change through the combined effect of fertility (birth rate) and mortality (death rate). Cultural anthropologists only have enough data to provide characteristics on three of five modes of livelihood. Birth intervals: the time between a birth and the next birth: moderate death and birth rates, moderate value of children, low rates of reproduction, fertility control: indirect and direct. Pronatalism (opposite being antinatalism): an attitude or policy that encourages childbearing. Prompted by the need for a large labour force: highest birth rates of the three modes of livelihood discussed, high birth rates, declining death rates, high value of children, pronatalist techniques. Increased reliance on direct means of birth control. The industrial / informatic mode of reproduction: negative population growth, mixed value of children.
