Document Summary

Each year new social determinants and psychological variables of speech behaviour are reported. New semantic, expressive, paralinguistic and kinesic features of behaviour involving speech have been isolated. There is work on a particularly subversive type of social correlate of speech that is called "situational" It is not the attributes of social structure that are considered here, such as age and sex, but rather the value placed on these attributes as they are acknowledged in the situation current and at hand. Indicative: the uncovering of new properties or indicators in speech behaviour. Once we are willing to consider gestural, nonwritable behaviours associated with speaking, two embarrassments face us: To describe gesture, let alone uncover its meaning, we need to know the context in which the gesture is made. At certain levels of analysis, the study of behaviour while speaking and of those who are present but not engaged in talk cannot be analytically separated.
