Document Summary

Paper chromatography is a separation method of components in a mixture, which depends on polarity and the fact that different substances have different solubilities in a specific solvent. The objective of this lab experiment was to use paper chromatography to separate five different transition metal cations, in order to determine their retention factors. The purpose of this experiment also includes using paper chromatography to separate some mixture of cations in an unknown solution, in order to identify the metal ion components of this unknown mixture. The five metal ions used in this experiment are: mn2+ Experimental method: 10ml of the developing solvent was pumped into a graduated cylinder. A glass stirring rod was held inside a 500ml beaker, and the 10ml of solvent was then poured onto the glass stirring rod and into the beaker. Figure 1 of the lab manual: the capillary tubes were then placed inside each of the six test tubes containing the metal ions.
