Possibilities of what we can understand are limited by the type of comparative opportunities established on the choice of research design. Critiques of research design help scholars decide on their options and potential interpretations of results. Structure of the research process is based on the type of research: exploring one particular case (exploratory) First two: social phenomenon explored or described but no comparison made. Explanatory: comparative element is present implemented through experimental design (participants randomly assigned to intervention and control conditions) Quasi-experimental design: participants not randomly assigned: groups divided in terms of their everyday decisions and actions, participants choose their part in the research, unlike in experimental design where the assignment is random, cross-sectional design: Compare groups at one particular time: longitudinal design: Trend study: assess different people or conditions over time from he same population, public opinion poles may be contrasted over each year of a particular leader.
