Sampling = clipping, selecting which material to use from chosen sources. Genre/meta fandom likes aesthetic sampling: focus quality, de-emphasize narrative. Focuses on video"s aesthetic qualities rather than story. Source fandoms concerned with commenting on characters or situations rather than aesthetics; expects audience to be familiar with samples; focus on interpretation and memory. Community memory = emotional resonance and meaning to members of community. The act of sampling tells us what fans found important or meaningful; Golden rule of editing = synchronization (sync): simultaneous audiovisual montage. Fan video editors consider beats per minute; mickey-mousing . Beat sync: actions or cuts happen on the beats of the song. Lip sync: certain lyrics are from the character"s pov. Lyric sync: direct correlation between the song"s lyrics and the visual images on screen.
