Document Summary
Although we commonly refer to the emergence of language in children as language acquisition", the end result of this process is actually a grammar the mental system that allows people to speak and understand a language. Two reasons for believing that development of linguistic skills involve the acquisition of grammar is that mature language users can produce and understand several sentences (unlimited number) and children acquire grammatical rules by making speech errors. Two complementary methods of data collection are used in the study of child language naturalistic observation and experimentation. In the naturalistic approach, investigators observe and record children"s spontaneous utterances; one investigation is called diary study (where they track and keep daily notes of the child"s linguistic process) Charles darwin was one of the first language diarists. In experimental studies, researchers make us of specially designed tasks to elicit linguistic activity relevant to the phenomenon that they wish to study.
