Document Summary

Age the critical period hypothesis: people who start learning their l2 before the age of. 7 will have native like l2 speech and people who start learning after 14 or 15 will probably have non-native like speech. Studies have also shown that some people can start learning their second language as adults and perform within the range of native speakers when it comes to pronunciation. Two types of motivation have been proposed: instrumental and integrative. Instrumental motivation involves wanting to learn the l2 for a specific goal or reason. Integrative motivation involves wanting to learn the l2 in order to learn more about a particular culture or fit into it better. The degree of integrative motivation correlates with the degree of success in language learning; subjects who score highly do better on certain language tests than comparable subjects who score poorly on the same tests.
