Document Summary

These processes allow us to operate through the world smoothly and ordinarily. For some people, the experience is not ordinary. Synesthesia is when a sensory experience in one domain is accompanied by a sensory experience in another domain. It"s a condition in which perceptual or cognitive activities trigger exceptional experiences. There is also emotional synesthesia, in which specific stimuli are consistently and involuntarily associated with emotional responses. The brains of synesthetes reflect the hyper-connectivity between parts of the brain associated with different sensory experiences. Those with synesthesia may experience come cognitive benefits derived from the experience. For psychologists, sensation and perception refer to the related but distinct aspects of our contact with the environment. Sensation is the stimulation of our sense organs. Perception is how we organize, summarize and interpret the stimulation. Psychophysics is the study of how physical stimuli are translated into psychological experience. Sensation begins with a stimulus, any detectable input from the environment.
