Document Summary
Three processes involved in memory: encoding, storage, and retrieval. How it looks, what it sounds like, etc. Active encoding is crucial process in memory. Focusing awareness on a narrowed range of stimuli (selective attention). Location of our attention filter depends on how much info we"re processing. We can"t multi-task" because our brains are dividing attention and hence performance. With verbal info, deeper processing: structural, phonemic, and semantic encoding. Structural: surface-level processing, physical structure (capital letter, bold font, etc. ) Phonemic: what a word sounds like (naming or saying the words) Semantic: meaning of verbal input (thinking about what the word represents) Deeper levels of processing result in longer-lasting memory codes. Elaboration can enhance encoding: linking stimulus to other info at the time of encoding. Visual imagery: images represent the word to be remembered. Self-referent encoding: making material personally relevant leads to easier recall. Incoming info can be processed in different ways.
