Document Summary

Psychology and science share three goals: measurement and description. Develop measurement techniques that make it possible to describe behaviour clearly and precisely: understanding and prediction. Believe they understand something if they can explain the reason for the behaviour. Do this through hypothesis: application and control. Once you understand something, you can control it better through the use of theories. A theory is a system of interrelated ideas used to explain a set of observations. Theories help go from describing a concept to understanding a concept. However most theories are too complex to be tested all at once. 1. formulate a testable hypothesis: select the research method and design the study, collect the data, analyze the data and draw conclusions using statistics, report the ndings so that other scientists can expand on the idea. Techniques of data collection: direct observation - watching behaviour and paying very lose attention to detail, questionnaire - subjects are asked a set of questions.
