The family system: complex system, members are interdependent, families are not isolated, influenced by larger physical, social, cultural and historical settings around them, families not static, change over time. The marital system: first and founding subsystem within the family system, relationship that is satisfactory to both adult partners; directly or indirectly facilitates effective parenting, good sibling relationships, and the healthy development of all the family"s children. The parent-child system: many paths to development of positive and negative social behaviours, parents have to try to adapt their methods to each child"s temperament and needs and to demands of the culture. Warm, involved, responsive; shows pleasure in and support of child"s constructive behaviour; considers child"s wishes and solicits her opinions; offers alternatives. Sets standards, communicates them clearly, and enforces them firmly; does not yield to child"s coercion; shows displeasure at bad behaviour; confronts disobedient child. Does not solicit or consider child"s desires or opinions.
