Factor Analysis
Looks for variables that are strongly correlated w/ each other
Finding dimensions that are highly correlated reduces the number of dimensions we
have to measure
Factors will be related to one unknown factor ("disposition" to these factors)
Factor loading: the strength of causal effect on the unobserved factor on the observed
personality measure
The Big Five
O.C.E.A.N-- openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, neuroticism
Neuroticism
Captures traits like anxious, fearful, easily stressed, moody, irritable, etc
Normal variations of neuro is good bc motivates ppl to avoid dangerous sit'ns or to
overcome obstacles
Women tend to score higher
Extraversion
Sociable, outgoing, excitement seeking, active, dominant, etc
More sensitive to rewards
Openness to Experience
Influences vividness of imagination, artistic sensitivity, more intense emotional
experiences, greater flexibility in behaviour, curiosity, unconventional attitudes, etc
High openness usually more progressive values (politically left-leaning)
Influences ppl's career choices + mate choices
Agreeablesness
Altruism vs egotism, selflessness vs selfishness
Highly characterized by empathy, sympathy and modesty
Spouses do not match in agreeableness
o If two unagreeable ppl are together, not happy
