PSY270H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Wax Tablet, Wilhelm Wundt, Biological Computing
Document Summary
Our perception through senses and our interpretation of these sense. Current research in cognitive psychology bridges cognition with philosophy, linguistics, cognitive science, and neuroscience. Aristotle purposed that our memory is like a wax tablet and that memories form in the tablet like molds in hot wax. Durability of the memory depended on many different factors like the durability of molds in hot wax varied. Wilhelm wundt (one of the first psychologists) studied conscious experience through introspective methods (self-report) Ebbinghaus studied his own memory to determine how relearning can be easier after being previously exposed to an idea. Created the forgetting curve from his own decline in memory performance over time (curve is still found today in memory performance by other psychologists). Behaviorism led to the decline in popularity of cognitive approach to psychology. Behaviorists argued that introspection is biased, not all mental processes are consciously accessible, and not all mental processes can be verbally reported accurately.
