Document Summary

The study of children"s development is a relatively recent enterprise. In the medieval period, people viewed children as miniature adults and did not recognize childhood as a distinctive period deserving special attention. Scientific study of children"s development began with the pioneering work of the evolutionary biologist charles darwin. Darwin looked at the development of emotion in his own and other children which is now an important part of studying emotions in social development. G. stanley hall used questionnaires to document children"s activities/feelings/attitudes. In the early history of developmental psychology, scholars took opposing positions on what was known as the nature-nurture issue. Today, we look at how the expression of a particular inherited biological characteristic is shaped, modified, and directed by a particular set of environmental influences. Children are active agents who, to some extent, shape, control, and direct the course of their own development.
