John kissed mary: different meaning, but still grammatical: sentence 1: the catcher swore, sentence 2: the umpire noticed that the catcher swore, complex sentence: the crowd saw that the umpire noticed that the catcher swore. Two types of linguistic rules: open class words (aka content words, lexical categories): nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Open class because they can be made up.
