Generativity of language: the idea that speakers and listeners have the ability to understand a wide array of new sentences. Defined as the rules for how sentences should be combined. Some sentences are grammatical, while others are not. General rule for this: sentence agent of action + action + recipient of action. Simples sentences are combined to form complex sentences. John kissed mary: different meaning, but still grammatical: sentence 1: the catcher swore, sentence 2: the umpire noticed that the catcher swore, complex sentence: the crowd saw that the umpire noticed that the catcher swore. Two types of linguistic rules: open class words (aka content words, lexical categories): nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Open class because they can be made up.
