PSY341H5 Chapter 3: chapter 3 notes
Document Summary
Research a systematic way of finding answers to questions. Science requires that claims be made on theories backed up by data from well-designed studies that test alternative explanations and that observations be checked and repeated before conclusions are drawn. The same treatment can be shown as being helpful, have no effect or be harmful: even when the research findings are clear, often professionals or parents will dismiss the finding because they have found an exception. It is the accumulation of findings that advances the field, not one study. Hypothesis is generated from observation, theory, previous studies, and a decision is made in deciding the general approach to research. Identifying the sample to be studied, selecting measurement methods and looking into the research design and procedure. Nature and distribution of childhood disorders questions are frequently addressed through epidemiological research studying the incidence, prevalence and co-occurrence of childhood disorder.
