Into the mid-1800s, specific laws allowed children with severe developmental disabilities to be kept in cages and cellars. In western society, an inkling of the perquisites for a social conscience first occurred during the seventeenth century, when both a philosophy of human care and institutions of social protection began to take root. For 2 decades, many communities opted to segregate or institutionalize people with mental disabilities and to prevent them from procreating (eugenics: the long-standing, medically based view that abnormal behaviour is a disorder or disease. Freud was the first to give meaning to the concept of mental disorder by linking it to childhood experiences. Pavlov"s experimental research established the foundations for classical conditions, and in the classic studies on the conditioning and elimination of children"s fears. Behaviourism behaviour: watson is known for the little albert experiment. Families, communities, and societal and cultural values play a strong role in determining how successful current child-rearing philosophies are at benefiting children.
