Document Summary

The social definition of deviance and crime: no act is deviant in and of itself- people commit deviant acts only when they break a norm and cause others to react negatively. The difference between deviance and crime: deviance: departure from a norm that evokes negative reaction from others, what is considered a crime in some times and places- is normal in other times and places. Law: a norm stipulated and enforced by government bodies. People who commit serious acts of deviance are typically punished either formally or informally. Formal punishment: penalization by the judicial system for breaking a law. Informal punishment: a mild sanction that is imposed during face to face interaction rather than by the judicial system. Ex) prostitutes were stigmatized as fallen women who spread disease and spread crime in public places. Types of crime and deviance vary in terms of the severity of the social response, which ranges from mild disapproval to capital punishment.
