Introduction, Sociological Imagination Jan 7  pg 3­10 • Sociological maps – C. Wright Mills  o Wrote it allows us to understand the connections of people, society biography and  history o It acts as a compass that develops and changed according to the wielder • Goals o Sociology­ Systematic study of human behaviours in social context.  Helps clear up assumptions and see how the social world works more  clearly o Sociologic research driven by desire to improve the social world o Methods of collecting data and analyzing their strengths and weaknesses o Can help with accepting social changes • The Sociological Perspective o  Analyzing Suicide    Appears to be supreme antisocial and non social act  Condemned deed= taboo  Committed in private – far from pubic scorn  Driven to look at the individuals state of mind than of society • We ignore the patterns of social relations that condone or condemn  such actions o  The Sociological Explanation of Suicide    Durkheim • Pioneer of the discipline • Demonstrated that suicide is more than an individual act of  depression from psychological disorder • Believed it was strongly influenced by social forces o Suicide rates vary by degree of social solidarity  Degree of shared beliefs and values, intensity and  frequency of their interaction  Values­ Ideas about what is good and bad, right and  wrong • Theory­ A tentative explanation of some aspect of social life that  states how and why certain facts are related o  Durkheim’s theory of suicide  ­  Suicide rates declines and then rises as social  solidarity increases  Altruistic suicide­ Results from norms very tightly governing behaviour  (High­ solidarity) • Ex/Soldiers that knowingly risk their life to protect comrades,  commit this out of a deep sense of patriotism and comradeship    Egoistic suicide (Low –solidarity) – From poor integration of people into  society b/c of weak soc
