They have provincially appointed crown attorneys that prosecute the criminal code, and federally appointed crown attorneys that prosecute persons that are charged with other federal statutes eg. controlled drugs and substances act. Crown attorneys are involved in advising police officers at the pre-charge stage, prepare for trial, and prepare for post trial appeals. Crown counsels are usually involved with negotiating pleas, developing trial strategies, managing witnesses, arguing bail conditions, recommending sentences to the court, and appealing sentences that are too lenient.
