Goals of sentencing: utilitarian goals focus on future conduct and others who might commit similar offence. Types of sentences: concurrent sentences merged into 1 and serves at the same time, consecutive served in sequence. 3: cj code all sentences to be concurrent unless trail judge specifies otherwise. Judicial determination: federal inmates can apply for parole after serving one-third of sentence, primary objective of this is to protect public, offenders receiving judicial determination more likely than other offenders to serve their entire sentence in confinement. If justice of peace believes on reasonable grounds person is threat to defendant may have restraint order with conditions: violation result in imprisonment, fear of criminal organization, sexual offence or personal injury. Extraordinary measures: dangerous and long-term offenders: dangerous offender (do) designation.
