The Settlement as a Factor in the Labour Market Jane Addams Pages 70-72  “one man or group of men sometimes…philosophical proposition” (pg70)- putting theory into practice  To obtain a more equitable distribution of product, and to secure more orderly existence for labourers  Early leader of settlement house movement in United States  Addams was a theorist of rights and needs of the poor (especially women)  Questions of economic and social injustice  When the social conscience has been expressed, it is not hard for others to follow  Settlement accepts ethics of its generations that the sharing of the life of poor is essential to understanding and improving of that life  Hull-House located in poor neighbourhood in Chicago (first settlement house in U.S.)  Having observed workers in (sewing) trade as compared to those in organized trade, they found that lack of organization in trade tends to industrial helplessness of workers 
