Chapter 1: ways of thinking about sociological health and illness. Dominated north american sociology for many years. Emile durkheim defined soc as a science of social facts. Social facts are to be treated and studied as if they are real. Emile provided both theoretical and methodological models for structural functionalism. Sickness can lead to a societal breakdown resulting from the inability of the sick to do their social roles. 4 components of the sick role: the person is exempt from normal social roles.
