SOC239H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Female Sexual Arousal Disorder, Old Testament, Miasma Theory
Document Summary
While we have used the terms social determinants of illness and social producion of health and illness model, others such as leaonard pearlin (1992), have labeled this type of acivity structure-seeking. Sociologists who are structure-seekers take measures of mortality, morbidity, and healthcare uilizaion as objecive assessments of health status. In contrast, pearlin describes meaning-seekers as those who explore the meanings of health and illness from people"s lived experience of these condiions. Discerning these meanings requires a diferent set of methods, including qualitaive and textual analysis. Meaning-seekers would state that disease is not an objecive enity that must be discovered through scieniic methods but exists because our society has deined it as exising. The history of leprosy illustrates the long-standing belief that moral failure can produce the physical manifestaions of disease. In the old testament > people are punished with leprosy for sin against god. New testament > jesus denies that disease was punishment for sin.
