Document Summary

Chapter 3: aging in canada and the world today. Social change adds to the challenge of aging in the least developed countries: older people face hardships in africa because of rapid urbanization- old left in villages, young move to cities to find work. Rapid population aging because of hiv/aids: hits working-age population, loss of middle-aged caregivers to elders, older africans left as caregiver to orphaned grandchildren. Older people can no longer count on children for support. Similar challenges to other developed nations: higher pension, chronic disease, rethink healthcare. Increase in healthcare and pension costs, encouraging people to work longer, raise taxes to increase costs, or increase the national debt. Demographers study three conditions that affect a population"s size and structure: Helped keep canada"s population young at the start of this century. More immigrants in the older age group leave canada than arrive, returning to home country to enjoy traditional culture in old age and to die in their homeland.
