Drawing on in- depth interviews and ethnographic observations of family homecare providers, we find that providers perceive their paid caregiving as deviantbehavior that violates social norms surrounding family care, i. e. that peopleshould not be paid for the care of kin. These caregivers, most of whom are poor and qualify for state support, essentially become employees w ithin their own homes, in charge of family"clients. " Specifically, caregivers perceive waged care as a violation of social normssurrounding family care, namel y that care should not be exchanged for pay. The obligation to care there are clear social norms associated with theprovision of both formal and info rmal care in the u. s. context.
