Document Summary

Chapter 6: from universalizing to queering & globalizing. Theory is about knowing the world in which we live in. Postmodern theory emerged out of the horrors of ww2, it was a response to the massive changes in tech, consumerism & globalization. Postmodern theorists: jacques derrida, michel foucault all claim masquerading as universal truths need to be questioned & the underlying agendas of such truth claims need to be exposed. They use deconstruction to expose the power & politics embedded in metanarratives, uncovering transcendent truths as socially constructed. Deconstruction is the process of breaking down terms, concepts & ideas that uphold truth claims, exposes the assumptions & power hierarchies that are invisible on surface, is political & analytical tool for exploring knowledge. They argue that meaning of words aren"t fixed and they emerge in context. Challenged the idea that knowledge is unconcerned & unaffected by personal interests.
