American far west: patterns in the process of labour migration and settlement, labour migrants drawn from backward areas whose economies have been disrupted and subsequent development distorted by western colonial incursions. Distortion of the economy leaves large segments of the population with usual means of livelihood interrupted: migrants recruited by receiving countries strictly to fill labour needs, not to become permanent settlers. Policies designed to prevent long term settlement: migrants serve as a reserve army of flexible and cheap labour. Jobs they fill are those shunned by native workers due to insecurity of the job, season, arduous, low paying and degrading.
