Anthrology notes
Chapter 1
for some, the creation by an all-powerful, supernatural being who cannot be seen but
whose existence is inferred by the great powerr and beauty reflected In the world
amongst us
- There are 3 origin tales
1) Yanamamo, native American living in Southern Venezuela and Northern Brazil
Hunt and farm in the jungles of the Orinioco River
Chognon 1997: in the beginning, the cosmos were made of four layers
The first layer had once had a function but now is empty, second layer is the visible
sky, third layer is earth, huge jungle dotted with counter less Yanamamo villages,
and fourth layer contains a single village inhabited by spirit people who sometimes
travel up to earth to capture and eat the souls of children and must be guarded
against
The Yanamamo gods were created with layers of cosmos
Each is being presented with a specific function; plants, tools, fire, animals,
knowledge of farming
Panama believe they came to creation when one of the first beings were Periboriwa,
who came to earth to eat the souls of children, two other first beings shot at him as
he ascended to the second layer, Periboriwa was wounded with each drop of blood
that hit the earth became a Yanamamo man
Since they are created of blood each men are fierce warriors
One of the men became pregnant on his leg and gave birth to more men and new
types such as women came to life
The new panama people were timid and docile
All first beings became spirits and now dwell with the souls of departed yanamamos,
on the second layer a replicas of the real world third layer
The ancient Hebrews
Two different versions of their creation story
An all-powerful being who brought order to a chaotic world of water
In six days he created, light; heaven; the earth with its dry land, oceans and plants
the sun, moon and stars, animals, flying creatures, land animals and in his own
image man and woman
This being told them that the creations were for their use
Told them the man and women to replenish the earth and subdue it and granting
humans with domain over the fish of the sea and over every living thing that
moveth upon the earth
Second version proved additional details concerning the origins of humans and
relates the early history of the Hebrew people
Human like god creates water on a dry world and produced a man out of the Dust of
the ground
He plants a garden in a place called Eden for the man to care for and eat from
www.notesolution.com
So the men dont feel lonely and have partners, god created beasts and fowl, none
were compatible for the man
So god puts him to sleep and makes a woman from one of his ribs
God discovers that the 2 human have eaten from the forbidden tree of knowledge,
now they had too much knowledge and were a lot like a god
God cursed women to have sorrow of bearing children and to the rule of men,
punishes the man by forcing them hard labor of farming
Generations pass and become more sinful, god punishes them by producing a flood to
destroy all his creations
He directs noah ( descendant of the first 2 humans) to build an ark, on which he, his
family and a few representatives of other living creatures are saved
The Maya
Central America
2000 years ago, they developed a civilization with a pyramid, a calender and far
reaching trade networks, they developed writing system, Popol Vuh one of the
remaining books
According to Popul Vuh; there were no people, animals, birds, fish, crabs, trees or
stones, only the calm sea exists
The creator Kucumatz and Tewpew, first made the earth with mountains, plains,
rivers and then made animals such as deer, jauars, and snakes, assigned each a
living place on earth
The animals could not speak so the creators made creaturs that could; people
First people made of mud could speak but had no minds and dissolved in the
water
Then they made people out of wood and multiplied and spread across the earth, they
could speak but lacked blood and minds, they were destroyed since they couldnt
remember who had created them
Some wooden men escaped to the jungle where reamins of them today are the
monkeys; according to the maya this is why the monkeys are similar to human
The fox, coyote, the parrot and the crow told them creators about the white corn that
grew on earth
The creators ground mixed the yellow and white corn into a meal from which they
made the flesh and blood of the first true people, these people had blood and minds,
and they worshipped the gods who created them
Creation myth
Creation myth provides several of functions, account of the origin of the world, tells
storys of the beginnings and early history, lays out the societys worldview and belief
system. It explains the origin and meaning of a peoples rules of social behaviour
Codify, rationalize, justify and stabilize a given social system
Creation story reflects the environment, history and cultural system
