ANTA01H3 Chapter Chapter 6: Anthropology Text Book Chapter 6 Notes
Document Summary
Chapter 6: an overview of the primates (notes) Primates are not specialized (they cannot be defined by one or even a few traits), but instead are generalized. Non human primates are found in tropical or semi-tropical areas of the new and old worlds. New world places include southern mexico, central america, and parts of south america. World places include africa, india, southeast asia, and japan. Almost all primates are, at least to some degree, quadrupedal (using all four limbs to support the body during locomotion). Vertical clinging and leaping = a form of locomotion found in some lemurs and tarsiers, in which individuals leap and cling from one tree to the next. Brachiation = a form of locomotion where an individual uses their forearms to swing from branch to branch (humans can do this on the monkey bars). Brachiation is the most common form of locomotion in species that have arms longer than legs, long curved fingers, and shortened thumbs.
