Document Summary

Reading in textbook relevant for term test #1 lecture 10. Review figures : 4. 1 isolated / closed / open systems in thermodynamics. An isolated system does not exchange matter or energy with its surroundings. A closed system exchanges energy with its surroundings. An open system exchanges both energy and matter with its surroundings: 4. 6 a simple thermodynamic example of a living cell. In the diagram on the left, molecules of both the cell and surroundings are in a relatively disordered state. In the diagram on the right, the cell has taken in energy from the surroundings and used the energy to perform work required to make molecules more ordered. This energy transformation releases heat which increases the disorder (entropy) of the surroundings: 4. 8 the relationship between free energy / stability / work capacity. The greater amount of free energy results in the system being less stable and have a greater work capacity.
