Ecosystems and Global Ecology
Earth is a closed system with respect to matter open system with respect to
energy.
The 4 Compartments of the Earth:
OCEANS
Over very long time scales, most materials that cycle through the four
compartments
exchange materials with end up in the oceans. the atmosphere only at
their surface
respond slowly to inputs, receive material from land in river runoff
FRESH WATER
In lakes, nutrients taken up by aquatic organisms end up as part of the
sediment
Surface waters of lakes become depleted in nutrients
Bottom- water becomes depleted in oxygen.
TURNOVER, or mixing, reverses this process.
Turnover in shallow lakes caused by wind.
Turnover in deep lakes is controlled by temperature.
In summer, surface waters warm, and the less dense water layer floats over
colder, denser bottom water. The transition is called the THERMOCLINE
ATMOSPHERE
A thin layer of gases surround Earth:
The STRATOSPHERE extends out to about 50 km. Most materials enter
stratosphere at the intertropical convergence zone.
A layer of OZONE in the stratosphere absorbs most of the UV radiation from
the sun.
