BIOB34H3 Chapter Notes -Epigenetics, Hemoglobin, Menarche
Document Summary
Answers to end-of-chapter questions by richard w. hill to accompany. Chapter 4: physiological development and epigenetics: you are asked to give a 20-minute talk to high-school students on why nutrition matters in a child"s first years of life. Your assignment is to present a biologist"s perspective. Answer: one aspect that deserves a great deal of emphasis is brain development. The function of our brains defines us as being human. As figure 4. 2 shows, the brain is already 90% developed, in terms of size, by the time a child is five years old. Because of this, half of the food that a five- year-old eats goes to nourishing the brain, and the brain is especially vulnerable if a young child"s food is inadequate in terms of quantity or nutritional value. Explain comprehensively the types of mechanisms by which this interaction takes place. Alternatively, especially ample resources may enhance growth or development of an individual of fixed genotype.
