Chapter 5/ lecture 5: coping with environmental variation:energy. Chimpz used stem as a tool to get food. Chimpanzees were the first non-human animal documented using tools to forage for food. Later birds (crows) also appeared to show the same behaviour. Organisms obtain energy from sunlight, from inorganic chemical compounds, or through the consumption of organic compounds. Chemical energy stored in the bonds of food molecules. Kinetic energy associated with movement of molecules; measured as temperature. Radiant and chemical are the forms organism use to meet the demands of growth and maintenance, while kinetic is important for controlling the rate of activity and metabolic energy demand of organism. Autotrophs are organisms that assimilate energy from sunlight (photosynthesis) or from inorganic compounds (chemosynthetic archaea and bacteria) Heterotrophs obtain energy by consuming organic compounds from other organisms-all of which was made by autotrophs. Holoparasite: have no photosynthetic pigment and are heterotrophs ex dodder.
