BIOB50H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Sensible Heat, Fish Migration, Cool Air
Document Summary
It is proposed that the abrupt shifts in salmon production is due to the long term climate variation in the north pacific (changes in sea surface temp) These gases absorb energy and radiate it back to the surface creating the greenhouse effect. Some radiation is reflected, some is absorbed by gases and the rest is absorbed by land and water: radiation gets emitted to the atmosphere as infrared. These gases absorb infrared in the at(cid:373)osphere a(cid:374)d refle(cid:272)t it (cid:271)a(cid:272)k to earth"s surfa(cid:272)e. Atmospheric and oceanic circulation: near the equator, the sun"s rays strike earth"s surface perpendicularly. This pressure decreases with increasing altitude, so as a pocket of warm air rises, it expands. Decreasing temp with increasing elevation is known as lapse rate. Also wind velocity increases with increasing elevation because there is less friction with the ground surface: precipitation is highest at tropical latitudes.
