Document Summary

Aqueous solutions- water is the solvent and a solid, liquid, or gas is the solute. Solubility- is the amount of the substance that will dissolve in a given amount of solvent. Entropy- measure of energy randomization or energy dispersal in a system. When the barrier between compartments is removed, each gas-along with ke becomes spread out or dispersed over a larger volume -thus greater entropy. The pervasive tendency for energy to spread out, or disperse, whenever it is not restrained from doing so is the reason two idea gases mix. Common example: transfer of thermal energy from hot to cold. Like dissolves like- polar dissolves with polar, non-polar dissolves with nonpolar. Separating the solute into its constituent particles -always endothermic. Separating the solvent particles from each other to make room for the solute particles-endo. Mixing the solute particles with the solvent particles-exothermic. Enthalpy of solution is the sum of the changes in enthalpy for each step.
