ERNEST BURGESS: THE GROWTH OF THE CITY (178-186)
- in the US, there is a transition from rural  urban taking place
omanifestations of modern life are urban; skyscraper, subway, dept. store etc.
- the subtle changes in our social life are called social problems (eg. Divorce, delinquency,
social unrest)  all found in the largest US cities
- more women:men in cities, more youth and middle aged, more foreign born,
heterogeneity alter the city’s social structure  these variations in the compositions of
population are indicative of the social changes occurring in cities  represent growth of
the city
- Weber described growth in the aggregation of the urban population
Expansion as physical growth
- Expansion of city in city planning/zoning is in terms of its physical growth  surveys look
at the direction and rate of growth of the city to look at where services would be
demanded (eg. Surveys from bell telephone company)
oDevelopment of parks/boulevards/widening streets/civic centers are all about
the future control of the physical development of the city
- The Chicago Regional Planning Association are attempting to measure expansion in
order to deal w/ the changes accompanying city growth
- In EU/USA, the tendency for the city to expand is called the “metropolitan area of the
city” which overruns its political limits and state lines
oThis area is defined by the facility of transportation that allows people to live in
CHI suburb and work in CBD

Document Summary

Weber described growth in the aggregation of the urban population. The chicago regional planning association are attempting to measure expansion in order to deal w/ the changes accompanying city growth. Typical process of city expansion can be best explained by a series of concentric circles number to designate successive zones and the types of areas differentiated in the process of expansion. Figure shows: expansion occurs through the tendency of the each inner zone to extend its area by the invasion of the next outer zone succession. Map is not ideal no railroads/river/historical factors for the location of industry. The general process of expansion in urban growth involves the antagonistic and yet complementary processes of concentration and decentralization tendency for transport (local/outside)/ to converge in cbd. In dt, also see dept. stores/skyscraper offices/railroad stations/city hall/art museum etc: economic, cultural, political centers are here. Centralization can be conceptualized by the fact that 500k people enter chi loop daily.
