EESA06H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 16: Sandar, Periglaciation, Thermokarst
Document Summary
Laurentide ice sheet (20, 000 years ago), is the last ice sheet to cover nearly all of canada (33 million cubic km in volume: this episode of glaciation only ended about 10, 000 years ago. Older glaciation extends backs as far as 2. 8 billion years ago. Ancient glaciers support the theory of plate tectonics. Glacier: a large, long-lasting mass of ice, formed on land that moves downslope under the influence of gravity: it develops as snow is compacted and recrystallized. Two types of glaciated terrain on earth: alpine glaciation: found in mountain regions, continental glaciation: exists where a large part of continent is covered by glacial ice. In both cases, moving masses of ice profoundly and distinctively change the landscape. The theory of glacial ages: hypothesis of past extensive continental glaciation of europe was proposed, louis agassiz. Travelled through europe to promote and extend this theory. Last glaciation was at its peak only about 18 000 years ago.
