Document Summary
Themes in world history: class structure and economic development in the american south (notes) Class structure in the deep south has done the most damage to black slaves, who did not own land or possess capital. This issue had a far reaching effect on the southern economy on a broader scale. The post war economy is not responsible for black poverty in the deep south. Black income grew substantially during the southern post war economic phase; however, their white counterparts still earned three times more. The economy provided a realm of equality, freedom, and achievement that blacks were denied in political and social life. This is a capitalist feature as it allows for any individual to engage in the competition and investment based qualities associated with it; however, the main issue for blacks was their lack of capital and property and government interference.
