Dichotomous di erences in approaches to de ning health: positive - health is well-being, an asset; de nitions are broad, take well-being into account, negative - illness or disease oriented; focus on health as absence of disease. Seedhouse - health is foundation for achievement; optimum state of health is equivalent to set of conditions that enable person to work to ful l her realistic chosen and biological potentials. Health doesn"t have a clear identity of its own, hard to de ne but in uenced by many factors; not stable over time or within di erent contexts; sub-concepts that make up dynamic whole. Di er from lay perspectives as these are derived from academia. Perspectives of the ordinary or non-professional people; folk beliefs that are complex. Better to call it commonsense understandings and personal experience. Central to social model - people have most insight into their own health experiences.
