Section 3; Chapter 8.2
Methods of Analyzing Change in Longitudinal Studies
Analyzing Change
turnover tables are needed provide a basic analysis of the percentage changes in
all directions in a variable of interest
Changes can include life experiences from respondents women getting pregnant as
they get older, etc
Change Scores
The instruments scores are compared before and after an intervention that is
expected to affect the construct
Current issue because there isnt a sufficient method of calculating the scores
Effect Size and Change Scores
Test the relative magnitude of the differences between means, and describe the
amount of total variance n the dependent variable
Provide an indication of the magnitude of differences between groups, of the
magnitude of change between assessment periods
Can judge responsiveness to change of a measurement instrument
No information about meaning of the change in score
Most common method calculate the difference between mean scores at
assessments, divided by the standard deviation of baseline scores
Transition Items
Validation check
Respondents are asked directly about transitions
Potentially biased
Regression to the Mean
