By the 1800s it was found worldwide: on 20 october 1880, laveran examined blood from a soldier with malaria and found transparent globules containing black-brown malaria pigment within the red blood cells. He also found mobile filaments emerging from the clear spherical bodies, a process he called exflagellation: laveran also discovered that some patients had blood cells shaped like crescents. The disease malaria: there are four plasmodium"s that are specific for humans: p. falciparum, p. vivax, p. ovale, and p. malariae. In pregnant female, falciparum malaria may result in stillbirth, lower birth weight or abortion: non-immune individuals and children may develop cerebral malaria, causing mechanical blockage of micro vessels in the brain to sequestration of infected red cells. If relapse occurs in falciparum malaria it is because the number of preexisting erythrocytic forms, previously too low to be detected microscopically.
