Health Informatics
Chapter 1
Overview of Health Informatics
- New field of study in the 50s-60s
- Resulted in more treatments and interventions that produce more information
- Technology has provided health care professional with more tools at there
disposal
- Due to the advancements of technology it can pose as a limitation of current info
technology that manages data and not information
- Mismatch between what clinicians need (something to help manage data= info)
and what they have (ineffective ways of managing info)
Hierarchy Triangle
- Data Info Knowledge Wisdom
- Informatics is the science of info and the blending of ppl, biomed and tech.
- Individuals who practice informatics are called informaticians or informaticists
- Data; symbols or observations reflecting differences in the world
- Information; provides the tools to generate info from data that humans can turn
into knowledge and wisdom
- Enabling and improving human decision making w/ usable info is a central
concern of informaticians
- Levels of data
o Level 1: Nonelectric Data (paper forms)
o Level 2: Unstructured, viewable electronic data (scans of paper forms)
o Level 3: Structured, viewable electronic data (electronically entered data
that cannot be computed by other systems)
o Level 4: Computable electronic data (electronically entered data that
cannot be computed by other systems)
Informatics Definitions
Health Informatics: field of info science concerned with the management of healthcare
data and info through the application of computers and other technologies
- Has several definitions and is also known as clinical, medical or biomedical
informatics
Biomedical Informatics: interdisciplinary field that studies and pursues the effective uses
of biomed info and knowledge for scientific inquiry, problem solving and decision
making motivated by efforts to improve human health
Bioinformatics: subfield of biomed informatics that is concerned with bio data esp. DNA
and genomic info as opposed to clinical, public health or other data
Health Information Technology: application of computers and tech in healthcare settings
Health Information Management: focused on the paper medical record and coding
Information Brokerage: sharing a variety of info back and forth b/w ppl and healthcare
entities
