PLAGUES- CHAPTER 1 NOTES -Legionnaires disease happend around 1976 and had symptoms of fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, dry cough, vomiting, diarrhea, disorientation, hallucination, and loss of memory widespread fear that this disease was an early warning of an epidemic air was implicated as the probable pathway of spread of the disease, and the most popular theory was that infection resulted from aspiration of bacteria (called Legionella) in aerosolized water from either cooling towers or evaporative condensers aspiration is when secretions in the mouth get past the choking reflex and instead of going into the esophagus and stomach, mistakenly enter the lungs and the mechanisms that are normally present to prevent aspiration are defective in older people, smokers, and those with lung disease -Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) had symptoms
