Chapter 13: Social and Emotional Development in Middle Childhood  13.1: ELF ­ESTEEM   Measuring Self­Esteem • Self­Perception Profile for Children (SPPC)  o Designed to evaluate self­worth in children 8+  o Scholastic competence  o Athletic competence o Social acceptance o Behavioral conduct o Physical appearance  o Children’s responses to these statements are then averaged to create a  measure of overall self­worth  Developmental Change in Self­Esteem  • Self­esteem dropping is common during middle childhood o Children begin to compare themselves with peers   More realistic feedback about their skills and performance   At home, parents may be their best fans  • Self­esteem becomes more differentiated o Able to evaluate themselves in more domains as they develop, their  evaluations in each domain are increasingly independent  o Children develop multiple self­esteems, each linked to a specific content  area  o Children’s academic self­concepts become especially well defined   25% of 9­10 year olds had negative self­esteem on three scales of  the SPPC  Sources of Self­Esteem  • Children are more likely
